Sexuality from a spiritual perspective

Sex I believe is not only a reality within the body but also has a much deeper connection to both our emotions and our spirits in the spiritual realm.

This is why the Bible teaches us, that sex should only occur within the covenant of marriage.

All human beings have been created with a purpose in life. Our Creator God designed us to be connected to Him, to be fruitful and to reign in life as holy creatures full of joy and full of heavenly wealth.

Jeremiah 29:11-14 “… For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and future.”

We are created in God’s image, our only purpose and our true identity are in Him, but if we are disconnected from Him, will be difficult to perceive ourselves and others from His Kingdom perspective.

“Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.” 1 Cor 13:12 NLT

In the same way, sex seen in the perspective of God is different from how the world views it.

As Christians, we are Holy because we are the Temple of God. God sent His Son to restore our relationship with Him and to restore our identity and making us the temple of God.

1 Corinthians 6:13-16 “… Now the body is not for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God, both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

As a born-again Christian, you are one with Christ; your spirit is one with the Spirit of Christ and you are not a “normal” human being, you’re a “supernatural” being, as you have the very same DNA of God and you have become Holy, because of the righteousness of God through the Blood of Jesus. When you get this revelation, you no longer want to contaminate yourself with immorality.

It is like if you are wearing a white dress, you are going to be really careful not to get it dirty and ruin it. As Paul said when we have sex with someone we become “one flesh” with them and because we are spiritual beings, there is a spiritual transfer that takes place between those two people. Through sex, we create what’s called a “soul tie” with the partner. Is like, we become one with the partner, and we could receive a transfer of that person’s attitude and even a demon.

This is why the Bible teaches us to live pure and flee from sexual immorality.

Sin has consequences and sexual sin causes us to give a piece of ourself away to the other person. The results in a fragmenting of our soul, and more fragmented we become and the more we lose unity in ourself and we lose our sense of identity and wholeness.

With God, there is always hope and there is Restoration. Jesus paid the price for our freedom and to restore us in all areas of our life.

With the power of the Blood and the power of the Holy Spirit, He can restore everything that has been damaged through sin, but He needs our full collaboration and we need to surrender yourself to Him.

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6) only He can fully heal our hearts and soul.

  1. Good thoughts and helpful perspective. God made us sexual beings and wants to redeem every part of our humanity that is broken, so that we can be restored into the image of God (Genesis 1) and now into the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). Thanks for writing.
